The one with my bad encounters with the Aussie
My trip to Australia was overall fruitful and an eye opener.
New experiences (good & bad).
Good experiences:
New friends, never tried before activities.
Bad experiences:
Discrimination.
(I will first talk abt my bad experiences)
I was so excited, boarding the British Airway aircraft, first time experiencing the business class services, the spacious comfy couch-like seatings, the variety of entertainment features and the specially prepared 3 course meal plus unlimited supply of different beverages. I cant wait to reach Sydney and meet the people over there.
After abt 8hrs of flight, we finally reached. As I proceed to collect my luggage, I was stopped right after the customs and this lady officer started to ask me random questions like whats my purpose here and what do I do back home. I realized that it was just a routine check so I let it pass even though she was quite rude. I didn’t want this to dampen my spirit. As I was waiting for my luggage to appear, another male officer came up to me and asked me the same questions. When I told him abt the lady officer whom she had signed her name on my ticket, he ignored me and continued to question me on the same stuff and told me to go a corner as he wanted to inspect my luggage. I was appalled but follow suit as Kev was targeted as well. As he ransacked my stuff, he continued to question me on my intentions there. When I told him abt my graduation in Canberra, he asked me for proof and when I showed him the grad gown which I brought, he asked for a letter…
FUCK YOU!
I thought to myself. How the fuck would I know I need to proof my purpose to a country even though I may only be going there for a holiday. If I am going just for a holiday, do I need a parent or government letter to proof myself?
FUCK YOU!
I was so pissed and mad that they would trouble me this way. I soon realized that Kev & me were the only ones being interrogated and whats worst is that we were the only Asians around. I realized it was discrimination!
After the whole ordeal, I was very traumatized, wondering would it be the same when I arrived in Canberra and Cairns later. The whole trip seemed to suck for me later on… It didn’t just stop at the customs, as I went on for my entire trip ard Australia, I encounter many more of such disturbing scene. It was really disappointing and I am beginning to hate WHITE ppl!
For a moment, I felt like a minority and you would think that it would be a lesson learnt and when we get back to Spore, things will be different and I will look at ppl in a new perspective… but you are wrong.
The problem is, we will never learn. We may complain abt how others discriminate us, but we ourselves on the other hand, would discriminate others. I guess its just the way of life. The whole fucking world is a mess now after Sept 11. Nothing will ever be the same.
There will always be discrimination, prejudice, hatred, revenge among ppl.
What can we do you may ask?
Avoid them.
I wouldn’t travel as much to western countries anymore.
Anyway, I still felt that services in Asian countries were far more superior than in Western countries.
And it’s a fact!
